Iran confirmed on Tuesday that Larijani was killed in an Israeli strike. Widely regarded as one of Iran’s most powerful figures, he was a close adviser to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his son Mojtaba.
The funeral also honoured Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Basij forces, who was killed alongside Larijani. The Basij is a volunteer paramilitary force under Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The ceremonies included a tribute to Iranian sailors who died on the navy vessel IRIS Dena, which was struck by the United States Navy in international waters off southern Sri Lanka on March 4.
