Brazil has revoked the visa of a US State Department official in response to a similar action taken against Brazilian officials last year. According to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the action has been taken against Darren Beattie as a ‘reciprocal measure’, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked and restricted visas of some Brazilian officials in August.
On Thursday, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes denied Beattie access to the Brasilia prison where former President Jair Bolsonaro is incarcerated. Lula stated that Beattie, who claimed to be visiting Bolsonaro, will be barred from entering Brazil until the visas for Brazil’s health minister and his family are reinstated.

“That American fellow who said he had come here to visit Jair Bolsonaro was forbidden to do so," Lula said, adding that he will be blocked from Brazil until the visas for Brazil’s health minister and his family are reinstated.
Justice Moraes, who sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for leading a coup attempt in 2023, noted that Beattie had requested a visa to attend the Brazil–US Critical Minerals Forum in Sao Paulo. The Brazilian foreign office expressed concerns that Beattie’s visit to Bolsonaro could be seen as “undue interference."
Lula, who is running for re-election later this year, is expected to face Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro, a son of the former president, as his main opponent. An anonymous Brazilian government official told The Associated Press that Beattie’s visa was revoked due to “the omission of information and lies about the purpose of the visit upon his visa request."
The official spoke under condition of anonymity for lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly, AP reported.
The White House did not comment on Lula’s decision or the Brazilian Supreme Court ruling.
The White House has not commented on Lula’s decision or the ruling by the Brazilian Supreme Court. Lula has indicated a desire to meet with Trump in Washington to discuss tariffs, security cooperation, and other topics, though no date has been set.
Beattie’s profile on the State Department’s website describes him as a former media entrepreneur and political strategist who has previously served as a White House speechwriter and policy aide.
