Pope Leo XIV has warned Catholic priests against using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to prepare their homilies, saying that machines can never truly share the faith and urging clergy to rely on their own intellectual and spiritual engagement instead.

Speaking during a private question-and-answer session with priests from the Diocese of Rome on February 19, the Pope said AI should not be used to draft sermons or as a shortcut for pastoral reflection. “Resist the temptation to prepare homilies with artificial intelligence," he told the clergy, according to Vatican News. “Like all muscles in the body, if we do not use them, if we do not move them, they die. The brain needs to be exercised so as not to lose this capacity."

Pope Leo stressed that a true homily is not just an intellectual exercise but an act of witness rooted in personal experience and faith. “To give a true homily is to share faith," he said, adding that artificial intelligence “will never be able to share faith."

The Pope’s comments reflect broader concerns within the Church about the role of technology in spiritual life. In the same meeting, he also cautioned priests against seeking social media “likes" and followers, suggesting that authentic evangelization cannot be reduced to online popularity.
