Fresh allegations of minority persecution have surfaced in Bangladesh, raising serious concerns about the safety of the Hindu community even after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) swept to power.

In a shocking incident from Chandpur, a 25-year-old physically challenged Hindu woman was allegedly abducted and gangraped on Sunday night after 9 pm.

The woman, a mother of one, had reportedly attended a kirtan when she was forcibly taken away. According to her video statement, accessed by News18, she was assaulted by three men.

“They kicked at my stomach. They grabbed my neck…They were three (men) who gang raped me," said the victim lying on a hospital bed as she was given intravenous fluid, in a video statement that is in possession of News18.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. She has identified the accused as Rakib, Sohail and Russel. However, no arrests have been made so far, sparking anger and fear among members of the local minority community.

The incident has once again put the spotlight on the vulnerability of Hindu minorities in the country, with critics alleging that attacks continue with impunity despite a change in government.

Lawyer’s Aide Hacked

In another disturbing case that took place after BNP’s win earlier, a 40-year-old lawyer’s assistant, identified as Amitabh Chandra Sujan, was hacked to death inside his own home in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. The brutal killing has further intensified concerns over law and order and the security of minority communities.

Beginning with the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, Bangladesh recorded 11 murders of Hindus in one month and 116 in the seven months before the election.

In his first public address since becoming Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman sought to assure rule of law. He said, “We want to turn this country into a safe land for every citizen. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians — regardless of party, opinion, religion, or ethnicity — whether living in the hills or the plains, this country belongs to all of us."

But these back-to-back incidents of Amitabh Chandra Sujan’s cold-blooded murder and a 25-year-old differently abled mother of ones gang rape after abduction from Kirtan — both Hindus — have raised serious questions about whether the political transition has led to better protection for vulnerable groups.

Bangladeshi author and journalist Shahidul Hassan Khokon has raised serious concerns over the situation of minorities in the country. Speaking to News18, he said that since August 2024, Bangladesh has witnessed what he described as “unprecedented persecution" of minorities, particularly Hindus.

“In this election the Hindus voted for the BNP with hope for dignity and survival which Tarique Rahman has promised. But the initial symptoms are very worrying. If not arrested right away, it will have a chance of spreading across," Khokon noted.
