The incident comes amid escalating violence in Mexico following the death of Nemesio “El Mencho" Oseguera, 59, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Oseguera, who had a $15 million US bounty on his head, was killed in a military shoot-out in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. Six suspected cartel gunmen were also killed, and three soldiers were wounded, according to the Mexican army.

Two cartel suspects were arrested, and a variety of weapons were seized, including rocket launchers capable of downing aircraft and destroying armoured vehicles.

CJNG, founded by Oseguera in 2009, has become one of the most violent drug cartels in Mexico, rivalled only by the Sinaloa cartel. His death is considered one of the most significant blows to a Mexican drug lord since the capture of Sinaloa founders Joaquín “El Chapo" Guzmán and Ismael Zambada, both now serving prison terms in the United States.

Following the announcement of Oseguera’s death, cartel members reportedly blocked roads, torched vehicles and businesses, and forced residents into hiding. The streets of Guadalajara, the state capital, were nearly deserted, with schools closed and shops shut down as Mexico remained on high alert.
